Harness family tree

Notes

16. Robert Harness Mr

Probably born in Lincolnshire. Lived at School Lane, Rochdale at time of his own marriage & 6 Hemans Place, Travis Street at time of John Matthew's wedding.

18. William Lambert Mr

William Lambert

Date of Baptism - 26th May 1850
Date of Burial - 19th February 1887

The eldest son and child of Francis and Jane Lambert.

William was born in Bainbridge probably in 1848 and on 14th June 1871 married Ann Preston at Askrigg Church.

It is presumed that they took over the farm of Greensley Bank at that time.

Ann Preston, baptised on 16th October 1853 appears to have been the elder living child of Thomas Preston ( born circa 1825) and Elizabeth Preston ( born circa 1831). Thomas Preston was a butcher and grocer in Bainbridge.

Ann’s brother - Wilfred Preston was born in 1864 and according to the 1881 census the event took place in Bradshaw, Lancashire. The strange thing is that the Ordnance Survey map has no record of such a place with the only Bradshaw recorded being between Keighley and Halifax. However, the census describes him as a butcher’s son and at the time he was living with his parents. In later life, it is known that he ran the Temperence Hotel in Bainbridge.

Wilfred and his wife Margaret are buried in the cemetery at Bainbridge

They had no children of their own but adopted a boy named Alec who appears to have been the son of a single girl from Hawes. As an adult, Alec ran the garage and filling station in Bainbridge.

William and Ann Lambert had the following children :-

Jane E Lambert (Born circa 1870)
Francis Lambert (Born circa 1872)
Margaret Anne Lambert (Born circa 1874)
Mary Alice (Born 10th June 1877) - my maternal Grandmother
Hannah Lambert (Born circa 1878)
Thomas Lambert (Born circa 1880)

It is understood that both sons died prematurely. As a result, this brought to an end a lineage that can be traced with certainty to 1702 and possibly as far back as Tudor times.

In common with many families in the late Victorian period, unmarried daughters were sent away from home into service.
It is understood that Hannah went to work for a family in Manchester. As far as is known she remained there after her marriage, apparently her daughter Audrey emigrated to New Zealand.
Although Margaret Anne was believed to have entered service in Sheffield it is understood that later she married a man called Moore and ran the Post Office at Whorlton.

My Grandmother Mary Alice moved to Berry Hills, a farmstead at Sutton Howgrave near Kirklington initially as housekeeper for William Gill and the children of his first marriage, before their own marriage.

Jane appears to have remained in Bainbridge. She married John S Foster and they had a daughter called Maggie who married and lived in Carperby. Jane and John are interred in the cemetary at Bainbridge.

After William Lambert’s death his widow Ann remarried to a man called Cockburn. Even though this was a common surname in Upper Wensleydale at that time, more precise information on his identity and the date of marriage has not emerged.

The couple had two known children :-

Rose Cockburn - she later went into service in Rochdale. There she met and married Mathew (Jack) Harness. Their son Fred, his wife Ivy and their sons Barry and Ian periodically visited his Aunt - Mary Alice who was Rose’s half sister.

Daisy Cockburn - she later went into service in Stafford

It is known that my maternal Great Grandmother Ann Lambert - later Ann Cockburn lived until at least the mid 1940’s and may well have outlived her second husband. In her old age she was living with her brother Wilfred at the Temperence Hotel and died there aged at least 93.

William Lambert was under forty years of age at his death. During a short marriage he and his wife reared a family of six children.

The location of the graves of both William Lambert and Ann Lambert (later Ann Cockburn) have yet to be located.

19. Ann Cockburn & Lambert (nee Preston) Mrs
